The Uprite Difference

Minimally invasive vs traditional.

Drag the handle to compare — the numbers below come from recent peer-reviewed studies.

Minimally Invasive

The Uprite approach

  • Tubular / percutaneous access, ~1–2 cm
  • ~277–331 mL less blood loss
  • Lower surgical-site infection rate
  • ~1.7 days shorter hospital stay
  • Equal patient-reported outcomes at 5 years
Traditional Open Surgery

The open approach

  • Long midline incision & muscle stripping
  • Significantly higher blood loss
  • Higher infection & medical-complication rate
  • Longer hospitalization
  • Slower return to activity

Figures from 2024–2025 systematic reviews and meta-analyses comparing minimally invasive and open spine surgery for blood loss, infection, length of stay and long-term outcomes. Sources: PubMed 2025, tubular vs open meta-analysis. Individual results vary; this is general information, not medical advice.

I fell and was unable to use my right arm and leg. Dr. Tawfik performed emergency surgery on my cervical spine. The next day I could actually lift my right arm and leg. I can now continue to live my life as I did before my accident.

Dr. Tawfik is an excellent physician. He is compassionate, caring, and really takes the time to explain to our family what he was doing and what to expect. An excellent neurosurgeon — I highly recommend him.

Two weeks after my consult he performed my surgery. He is very knowledgeable, explained options clearly, and I put my trust in him 100% and he delivered. His staff is amazing as well.

Dr. Tawfik literally saved my husband's life. He fell down a set of stairs and broke multiple vertebrae. Everything went perfect and my husband was able to return to work after 6 months of healing. I highly recommend them.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

Will I definitely need surgery?

No. Surgery is never our starting point. Many patients improve with non-surgical options like image-guided injections, interventional pain management or physical therapy. We only recommend a procedure when it is the right choice for your condition and goals, and we always explain why.

Can a doctor review my MRI before I come in?

Yes. Send us your MRI or imaging and our team will review it, explain what it shows, and point you to the right specialist. It is a great way to understand your options before committing to anything.

What does “minimally invasive” actually mean for my recovery?

It means smaller incisions, less muscle and tissue disruption, and often lighter anesthesia. For many patients that translates to less blood loss, a lower infection risk, a shorter hospital stay (frequently same-day discharge), and a faster return to normal activity compared with traditional open surgery.

How soon can I be seen, and how quickly could surgery happen if I need it?

We offer same-week consultations whenever possible. If you do need a procedure, scheduling depends on your condition and insurance approval, but our team works to move quickly — many patients are treated within a couple of weeks of their consult.

Do you take my insurance, and do I need a referral?

We work with most major insurance plans. In most cases you can book directly with us; if your plan requires a referral, our front desk will help you arrange one. Call (201) 849-1000 and we will verify your benefits before your visit.

I have leg swelling or varicose veins, not back pain — can you still help?

Yes. Alongside spine and nerve care, Dr. Elder leads our vein program, treating varicose and spider veins, leg swelling, chronic venous insufficiency and more with minimally invasive, ultrasound-guided procedures.

Where are your offices and what are your hours?

We see patients at two New Jersey offices — Totowa (825 Riverview Dr) and Hazlet (1270 NJ-35). Hours are Mon–Wed 9–5, Thursday 9–4 and Friday 10–3.
